“In orbital mechanics and aerospace engineering, a gravitational slingshot, gravity assist maneuver, or swing-by is the use of the relative movement (e.g. orbit around the Sun) and gravity of a planet or other astronomical object to alter the path and speed of a spacecraft, typically to save propellant and reduce expense.
Gravity assistance can be used to accelerate a spacecraft, that is, to increase or decrease its speed or redirect its path. The "assist" is provided by the motion of the gravitating body as it pulls on the spacecraft. Any gain or loss of kinetic energy and velocity by a passing spacecraft is correspondingly lost or gained by the gravitational body, in accordance with Newton's Third Law. The gravity assist maneuver was first used in 1959 when the Soviet probe Luna 3 photographed the far side of Earth's Moon and it was used by interplanetary probes from Mariner 10 onwards, including the two Voyager probes' notable flybys of Jupiter and Saturn.
Sling shotting a rocket using Gravity only exist in science fiction movies, and it does not work in the real world, not least of because Gravity is an unproven, theoretical illusion.
The kinetic energy of free-falling ball acquires is not an attracting body, but rather, that energy is actually stored in the ball, itself, when that ball is lifted to the height it is dropped from. In this way, it is said that gravity is subject to The Conservation of Energy principle and cannot change the total energy of an object.
Explanation
In the planet's frame of reference, the space probe leaves with the exact same speed at which it had arrived. But when observed in the reference frame of the Solar System (fixed to the Sun), the benefit of this maneuver becomes apparent. Here it can be seen how the probe gains speed by tapping energy from the speed of the planet as it orbits the Sun. (If the trajectory is designed to pass in front of the planet instead of behind it, the gravity assist can be used as a braking maneuver rather than accelerating.) Because the mass of the probe is many orders of magnitude smaller than that of the planet, while the result on the probe is quite significant, the deceleration reaction experienced by the planet, according to Newton's third law, is utterly imperceptible.
Possible Outcomes of A Gravity Assist Maneuver Depending On The Velocity Vector And Flyby Position of The Incoming Spacecraft
A gravity assist around a planet changes a spacecraft's velocity (relative to the Sun) by entering and leaving the gravitational sphere of influence of a planet. The spacecraft's speed increases as it approaches the planet and decreases as it leaves the planet. The speed gained from approaching and the speed lost from leaving is nearly identical, but the spacecraft is affected by the planet's motion around the sun during the maneuver. To increase speed, the spacecraft approaches the planet from the direction of the planet's orbital velocity, and departs in the opposite direction. To decrease speed, the spacecraft approaches the planet from a direction away from the planet's orbital velocity – in both types of maneuver the energy transfer compared to the planet's total orbital energy is negligible. The sum of the kinetic energies of both bodies remains constant (see elastic collision). A slingshot maneuver can therefore be used to change the spaceship's trajectory and speed relative to the Sun.”

Why Gravity Assist is a Hoax
Problem One:
1. Consider, now, the maneuver known as a Gravitational Slingshot (also Gravity Assist), allegedly used by space probes such as the Voyager 2. A space probe theoretically approaches a planet with velocity “V”, slingshots around, and ends up with velocity V+2U, where U is the velocity of the planet.
2. Consider the energy of the probe. Before, it was Ei=12mv2 and after it is Ef=12m(v+2U)2.
It looks like Ef is much bigger than Ei, but where did the additional energy come from?
This is a violation of The Conservation of Energy principle, therefore making Gravity Assists a science fiction idea, only.
Gravity Assist and Alleged Escape Velocity
Problem Two:
And even if the Pioneer, Voyager, Galileo, Cassini, Juno, New Horizons etc… type of probes were really in imaginary Outer Space, and survived the electromagnetic devastation of the Thermosphere and the Van Allen Belts, then still it would be impossible for them to accelerate in outer space by means of “Gravity Assist” due to the lack of atmospheric density to accelerate off of. Onboard propulsion engines, such as probes have, would have no effect whatsoever at whatever speed, regardless of the idea of Gravity. In a near vacuum, there is nearly nothing to push against, so an action-reaction based fuel engine cannot add any form of propulsion in outer space. Therefore, no course corrections against high Gravity fields can even be made to create the slingshot assist.
Problem Three:
Thirdly, Earth space command would have to instruct the space probe maneuvers by radio signal, which is an impossibility because of the plasma layer around our Earth. The interference patterns would prohibit any consistent, constituent, or accurate transmission.

Problem Four:
“Gravity Assist” is defined as a means to use the Gravity of a planet to get a slingshot effect when passing the planet and thus getting additional speed. This is as repulsion force. However, a planet’s theoretical Gravity causes any external object to be attracted to the planet, not being repulsed or repelled. Unless, one want to postulate that Gravity is BOTH an attractive and repulsive force at the same time, which is a patent contradiction, Gravity Assist cannot happen.
In conclusion, Gravity Assisted slingshots in outer space are an impossibility.
Gravity Assist Kicks/Slingshots/Flybys Are Not Possible: The Rosetta Satellite
“Media should study and report this impossible explanation of the magic gravity assist kick, i.e. that a spacecraft can turn 180° around a planet moving in the opposite direction and at the same time increase its velocity:
Say that Rosetta, mass 3 000 kg, after having been launched backwards (in reality Rosetta was launched forwards) from Earth by an Ariane rocket in a trajectory around the Sun arrives after a certain time with heading 180° at constant velocity v 18 800 m/s straight ahead towards the planet Earth moving in the opposite direction in orbit around the Sun at speed 29.800 m/s with mass 6 x 1024 kg, but offset 629.000 m above the surface not to crash straight into Earth (or the Moon). Planet Earth has radius 6.371.000 m. This is a simple 3 bodies problem. Two bodies, Earth and a spacecraft, Rosetta, moving around a third body, the Sun, meet and the smaller object is kicked away.
Rosetta, instead of crashing into planet Earth subject to Earth gravity, is subject of a gravity assist kick at 629.000 m altitude above Earth/7.000.000 m radius, we are told to believe that the Rosetta turns magically 180° around planet Earth at 621.900 m altitude/7.000.000 m radius, while accelerating from 18 800 to 78 400 m/s constant speed (average speed is 48.600 m/s after turning 90°) at about 125 m/s² and, after about 460 seconds, speeds off at 76.600 m/s speed (v + 2U) in the opposite direction, heading 0°, i.e. same direction of Earth.
During this time itself Earth has moved about 13.700.000 m in its orbit around the Sun ... in the opposite direction! So the gravity assist kick takes place around a planet that is moving quite a bit in the meantime.
Orbital space dynamics are funny, magic things.
You can of course take it easier and approach Earth offset 7.629.000 m above Earth surface. Your turning radius is then 14.000.000 m around centre of Earth and the 180° turn will take double time, i.e. 922 seconds and the acceleration will be half. And Earth will move 27.000.000 m in orbit around Sun in the opposite direction while doing the kick.”
